Thinking of slashing your marketing budget during an economic downturn?

Perfect, if you want your brand to disappear while competitors steal the spotlight 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yeesh! You might be thinking far out Lemonface, no need to be so blunt about it.

As harsh as it sounds, it’s the truth and we know it because we went through it earlier this year when one of our largest clients went into a kind of economy-induced hibernation (things got very, very quiet.)

There are a few things you can do when your work seems to be drying up.

PANIC! The world is falling down!!
Mmm, the world maybe. Not you though.

BATTEN THE HATCHES! Tighten the purse strings!
Mmhm, it’s useful to review your spending and try to spot where there are dollars slipping out when they should be staying put. This is a time when the dollars you are spending matter more than ever.

OSTRICH! If I can’t see it it’s not happening!
This is a classic one and sounds a bit like the uninspiring ‘survive til 25’ mentality. We know through history that the biggest opportunities can be found in tough times, so let’s aim for thriving not surviving.

DOUBLE DOWN! Double down on marketing, go out at get the work that IS still there
Yes. Louder for those in the back! This is the one we want to talk about. Where you pour your energy is where you see results.

PULSE CHECK take stock of your brand. Ask yourself - what's working? What’s not working? Does your brand still hold true to the business values? How has it aged? Like fine wine or milk left in the sun?

If you can afford to... we recommend getting a designer or marketing pro to perform an audit for you.

If you haven’t got room spare in the budget we feel you and we’ve developed a brand clinic to help give you a nudge in the right direction, more on this at the end of the blog if you’re keen to skip ahead.

Like we said, we found ourselves with an unusual lack of juicy projects earlier this year. As you know, being self-employed, you’re the cavalry. So we saddled up and got to work developing a new website that better represents who we are, what we do and who for. Spending the time on this has already delivered results in a few different ways.

  • Pride+energy, when you show up how you want to, it feels good and when you feel good you do good.

  • Builds your brand, effort into clarifying what you do, why and it makes it easier for prospective clients to realise that you’re the one they’re looking for

  • Confidence, doubling down on your own business and brand grows your confidence in yourself so rather than being afraid of the circumstances you gain control and confidence that you can take on any economic environment - another step towards world domination.

  • You stand out! If you’re the one still showing up, clients are going to see you. Less noise in the marketplace means more visibility for your content.  If you’re curled up in a ball waiting for the economy to get better, well… you might be there awhile.

  • Trust, when you keep at your regular messaging, keep doing what you do and show up with gusto, even when times are tough, people trust your brand more. They see you even in hard times sticking to what you’re good at.

  • Stronger recovery, investing now means by the time things do start looking up, you’ll be way ahead.

Great branding and marketing isn’t just about selling; it’s about building trust, loyalty, and a memorable brand identity. When others pull back, pushing forward with creative strategies can set you apart from the competition, positioning your brand as resilient and innovative.

So, don't let economic uncertainty dull your creative edge. Embrace it as a chance to rethink, reimagine, and reinvigorate your marketing efforts. After all, the best stories are told during the toughest times.

Read all this and relating really hard but don’t know where to start?

On Tuesday mornings bookings for the Brand Clinic will be open.

These are FREE 40 minute consultations to talk about anything you may be struggling with, pain points if you will, in your branding and marketing. The aim is to provide you with some quick wins and recommendations to help you through without costing you a cent.

If you don't need it but know someone that is struggling a smidge, forward this on to them. Let's help each other.

When the going gets tough, the tough get creative!

Here’s feedback from a long time client who we’ve just performed a brand audit for

“...the standout is Sarah-Jayne’s talent to extract, interpret and express what’s inside us as a company and process that into something real and tangible.

She is refreshingly candid, no fluff, no BS and has a pragmatic approach whilst still being a creative artist who can comprehend and converse at different levels.  This is a very powerful (and rare) blend for those looking for REAL business results."

High praise indeed! We’d love to use our powers for good so book in asap.
